Does Horny Goat Weed Increase Libido?

The name alone tells you enough about what the compound does. But does horny goat weed increase libido enough to make a difference in your sex life? Or is it yet another product that’s going to leave you (and your partner) frustrated and underwhelmed?

We’re going to dig into the science behind horny goat weed for libido. The short version, though, is that it’s included in our sex gummies for a reason. Its main active molecule (icariin) works through an intriguingly similar pathway to Viagra.

That’s not to say it’s a treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) like Viagra. But that it could be a natural way to improve performance in the bedroom. Learn more about the horny goat weed libido effects below!

Key Takeaways

  • The icariin in horny goat weed inhibits PDE5 (the same enzyme Viagra targets). Just not with the same potency.1
  • Studies show daily icariin supplementation can improve erectile function and blood flow.2
  • We have limited human studies showing horny goat weed’s impact on human sexual performance - but tons of anecdotal evidence.3
  • Snoozy’s sex gummies combine horny goat weed, maca root, panax ginseng, and damiana to bring a spark to your love life.

Understanding Epimedium (Horny Goat Weed)

You know it as horny goat weed, but that’s actually not its real name. Epimedium is the actual species of flowering plants that we’re talking about here. The name behind horny goat weed comes from a farmer noticing his flock was way more sexually active after grazing on the plant.

Whatever you call it, though, this flowering plant has centuries of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine. The sexual wellness side of things gets most of the attention, but horny goat weed may even have benefits for joint health and fatigue, too!

The common theme across all its use cases can be traced back to one molecule: icariin. This flavonoid makes up anywhere from less than 1% to over 20% of the plant depending on the species. That’s an important piece of context before we get into the horny goat weed libido studies. Not all species under the Epimedium family have the same concentration.

At any rate, icariin works through the same mechanism as Viagra - the most well-known ED treatment on the market. Both Viagra and icariin inhibit phosphodiesterase type 5, or PDE5.1 The difference comes down to strength.

Viagra is said to be around 80x more potent than natural icariin when it comes to blocking PDE5. Nevertheless, its ability to block PDE5 lets this signaling molecule known as cGMP accumulate in smooth muscle tissue, in turn, relaxing blood vessels so more blood flows to the genital region.4

This begs the question: does horny goat weed increase libido, or is it not strong enough to have an impact on male sexual wellness?

Does Horny Goat Weed Increase Libido?

The short answer is yes, there is plenty of evidence showing horny goat weed can improve sexual performance. But there’s a little more nuance at play. Mostly in the sense that the studies we have to fall back on are not human trials. Let’s take a closer look below.

Current Horny Goat Weed Libido Evidence

Most of what we know about how horny goat weed increases libido traces back to animal studies - and not just the old tale of the farmer with the frisky flock.

We took a look at a study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine which fed icariin to rats with nerve damage impacting erectile function. All treatment groups had better blood flow markers after four weeks - and you know what blood flow means for erections.2

There was something fairly unexpected from this study, though. Icariin was able to stimulate pelvic tissue nerve growth. This translated to greater neurite length than both control and sildenafil groups! In other words, there’s reason to believe horny goat weed not only helps address the side effect of ED, but may even repair the problem itself. Not even Viagra does that.

Another rat study looked at how icariin performed in testosterone-depleted animals. The findings: it could restore erectile function.5  We know that now. But this particular study also showed that icariin could improve nitric oxide synthase expression. This enzyme makes the necessary signaling molecule for blood vessel relaxation.

These first two rat studies look at ED with a very specific cause, though. So we kept digging, and managed to find a third study showing that horny goat weed libido effects hold true across many different causes of the problem.6

Limitations of Current Research on Horny Goat Weed

How could we not arrive at the conclusion that horny goat weed increases libido with all those studies to pull from? One problem - they’re all animal studies. We have very thin research showing the effects of horny goat weed on human sex drive.

There is one controlled human trial for icariin specifically. But it just looks at safety and absorption rather than performance outcomes. The good news is this clinical study did find that icariin is generally regarded as safe for human consumption.3

The bad news? Human-specific studies are seen as the end-all, be-all with clinical research. So until we have more concrete evidence showing icariin can absolutely improve sexual function in humans, it’s technically not possible to say “yes, it works.”

However, we feel that the evidence is strong enough that horny goat weed is worth trying for libido, especially given its safety profile. We haven’t even touched on some of the evidence from Chinese clinical reports - which are incredibly promising even if they don’t meet American modern trial standards.

For instance, patients did see improvements in sexual function after being treated with a blend containing horny goat weed. And countless customers have used our sex gummies and found that they were the missing piece from their sex lives.

Setting Expectations For Those With ED or Other Conditions

We want to be very clear that despite working through the exact same mechanisms, Viagra and horny goat weed are not interchangeable treatments for ED. The differences in strength must be kept in mind as you set your expectations for what this natural remedy can and cannot do.

Icariin is about 80x less potent than prescription medication. It’s also worth noting that prescription PDE5 inhibitors like sildenafil and tadalafil have tons of clinical trials with thousands of participants. We can’t say the same for horny goat weed or even icariin itself, for that matter.

What we will say is that the horny goat weed libido research is promising. And that it can be a powerful addition to any natural wellness regimen where the goal is to boost desire and arousal if prescription treatments are not an option.

How Quickly Does Horny Goat Weed Increase Libido?

Again, take the timeline with a grain of salt as we have no human trials to fall back on when it comes to how quickly horny goat weed can start making a difference in your sex life.

Most animal studies found that it took at least a few weeks of supplementation to really make a difference. However, those animal studies looked at icariin in isolation. That’s not the same thing as using our sex gummies, which deliver horny goat weed along with maca root, panax ginseng, and damiana for a more immediate impact on libido.

We’ve also read through tons of anecdotal evidence from real people like you who actually tried horny goat weed and shared their experience at length. Many said they felt something happening within an hour. So, you might decide to take your sex gummies 30-60 minutes before “the act” to spice things up a bit.

More Reasons to Add Horny Goat Weed to Your Wellness Regimen

So, does horny goat weed increase libido? Yes - at least, there’s more evidence suggesting that it does than evidence showing it doesn’t. However, the horny goat weed libido effects are just one reason to be excited about this ancient herb. Here are some other potential benefits:

  • Bone health: There is legit human evidence showing post-menopausal women who supplemented with icariin held onto more bone mineral density than the placebo group.7
  • Cardiovascular support: There are pre-clinical studies examining icariin’s protective properties for heart tissue, though no human trials have actually begun yet.
  • Testosterone: Researchers say icariin has “testosterone mimetic properties.”8 This is relevant for male sex drive, sure, but it also has implications for human health in general.

Aside from all that, we’ve seen plenty of people say they felt less fatigued after incorporating horny goat weed into their wellness regimen. The point is, this powerful little herb has a ton of potential!

Are There Any Side Effects of Horny Goat Weed?

The best part about using horny goat weed for libido is there’s no real side effect profile, unlike the vast majority of ED drugs. The one human trial we referred to above found zero adverse effects, except at the highest dose where two participants dropped out after experiencing GI discomfort.3

There was a 2025 case report where a man dealt with severe muscle spasms and higher creatine kinase after buying a sketchy epimedium supplement online, too.9 But we think that’s not so much a knock on horny goat weed as much as it is low-quality brands peddling junk on the internet. Just do your due diligence and shop with a trusted brand, and you should be fine.

There are only two other interactions you should be aware of:

  • Blood thinners
  • Blood pressure medications

Both can be impacted by icariin as it’s capable of affecting blood vessel tone and platelet function. There’s also reason to be cautious about combining horny goat weed with other PDE5 inhibitors such as Viagra and Cialis.

What Could You Consider Instead of Horny Goat Weed?

You came here to learn about horny goat weed for libido. But, this is just one of the many natural remedies you have at your fingertips for sexual dysfunction. The other one you’ll see talked about a ton is maca root.

Maca root does happen to have quite a bit of human data showing it can positively impact sexual desire. For example, one 12-week trial gave healthy men maca every day. The men found sexual desire ramped way up by the 8th week.10

It’s not just guys that can benefit from maca, either. A separate study found that women who took maca after menopause had way lower sexual dysfunction scores.11

One thing to note from both of these maca studies is that neither the male nor female participants had any changes in hormones. The herb worked through non-hormonal pathways.

What’s cool about this is that you can use maca and horny goat weed side-by-side to address your libido woes from multiple angles. We make it easy here at Snoozy with our sex gummies. Not only do they combine these two herbal ingredients, but you get panax ginseng and damiana for multi-faceted libido support.

This formula is specifically crafted to address sex from every angle - the physical side of things and the desire side of things. Our gummies prime both your body and mind for more intimate encounters, be it with your other half, a fun fling, a total stranger, or even just yourself!

Parting Thoughts on Using Horny Goat Weed For Libido

Let’s bring it all home - does horny goat weed increase libido? There’s plenty of data showing it can, but the lack of human trials makes it hard to say definitively.

Our opinion, though, is that the evidence is strong enough that it’s worth taking a shot on horny goat weed for libido. Especially if you’re combining it with other powerful natural remedies like we do here at Snoozy. Your order is backed by a 30-day money back guarantee!

Frequently asked questions

Does horny goat weed boost testosterone?

Low doses of icariin (the main compound in horny goat weed) did boost test levels in rats, but no human trial has found this to be 100% confirmed yet.

Can horny goat weed be used for erectile dysfunction?

It does block the same enzyme as ED medications like Viagra and Cialis. But it’s roughly 1/80th the strength, so you can’t expect the same effect. We like to look at horny goat weed as a supporting ingredient alongside a more well-rounded natural regimen.
